Known for his unforgettable live sets and outstanding stage presence, Toronto based DJ, Ryan Shepherd, has proven himself to be one of the best emerging electronic music DJ’s in Canada. He is fresh off his residency at one of Toronto’s most famous dance clubs, The Hoxton, where he has played alongside artists such as Robin Schulz, Faul, Hunter Siegel, Mr. Belt & Wezol, FlicFlac and Sam Feldt while playing a range of dance music that includes Deep House, G House, and Tropical House. His extensive knowledge and experience in electronic music allows him to take you on a musical journey with every set he plays. Now with his brand new Residency at Tattoo in Toronto and his upcoming releases, which include his take on Tracey Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason”, it would be in your best interest to learn the name.
Ryan Shepherd’s first taste of electronic dance music came in 2008 when his cousin Chris, who was just beginning to learn how to DJ, bought a small midi controller and showed him tracks by artists like Justice, Steve Aoki, Duck Sauce and Deadmau5. Ryan soon became addicted to the upbeat sounds of the rapidly growing genre and took it upon himself to learn how to DJ. Immediately he was hooked and began exploring this side of music while beginning to teach himself how to mix. Ryan locked himself in his bedroom for a summer to grasp the concept of mixing and he began playing small shows in his hometown of Georgetown, Ontario. Ryan then became the resident DJ for Laurentian University between 2010-‐2013 and made appearances every week at all the major nightclubs in the city. He was an integral part in establishing and maintaining a strong electronic music scene in Northern Ontario. It was here that he had the chance to play alongside artists such as Adventure Club, Dvbbs, Moguai, Botnek, The Killabits, Autoerotique, Felix Cartal, Charlie Darker, Eekoo, and Torro Torro. He has also gained the respect and support from artists such as MakJ, Vicetone and GTA-‐ not bad company.
While maintaining his residency in Sudbury, he would travel to Toronto to play at various nightclubs such as Stirling Room and Wetbar. During this time Ryan went on a Northern Ontario tour with his cousin, Chris Shepherd (Socialeyes) who had also made a name for himself within the industry. The two DJ’d under the name Shepwrecks and played shows in Timmins, North Bay, and Sudbury-‐ selling out nearly every show as their reputation grew for hosting the best parties in the area. He then made the jump to Toronto to continue playing shows but also to take a job working for one of the cities top electronic music event companies, Electronic Nation. He was on the team that brought massive festivals Digital Dreams (where he played inside the Cloud 9 tent B2B with Cosella) and also Veld to Toronto. It was here that he paved his way into the industry and made the right moves to land him a spot among the best in Toronto’s dance scene which includes shows with heavyweight event companies Ink, Live Nation, Embrace, and Cruel.
Looking to the future Ryan is playing upcoming shows every Saturday at Tattoo, secured a spot at Go Hard Festival this summer, and also is scheduled to play across Ontario and in Los Angeles. He is putting time into his monthly Listen Up Podcast series and also into producing his own tracks so you can expect lots of new music to vibe to all throughout 2015.
With an infinite amount of potential, coupled with his hard work and passion for music, it is not difficult to see why Ryan Shepherd is someone to watch and listen for as he continues to grow into an unforgettable talent.
